Established in 1991 by the University’s Board of Trustees, SMC is charged with investing and managing Stanford’s endowment and trust assets, expendable funds, and commercial real estate assets to meet the University founders’ vision in perpetuity. The portfolio is designed to optimize long-term returns, create consistent annual payouts to the University’s operating budget and preserve purchasing power for future generations of Stanford faculty and students.  As of June 2010, the portfolio is valued at $15.9 billion with a long term policy target to real estate of 16%. The Stanford endowment is the third largest university endowment in the US.
