The Golden State Warriors Owner Joe Lacob Hosts the SREC at a Game
Members of the SREC were given the All-Star treatment at a Golden State Warriors game on January 31st. Joe Lacob, Stanford Graduate School of Business alumni and co-owner of the Golden State Warriors hosted the SREC group to the game against the Dallas Mavericks. Joe, a partner with the VC firm Kleiner Perkins since 1987, along with Peter Guber led an investment group to purchase the Warriors in 2010. The Warriors are Joe’s passion and he dedicates the majority of his time to operating the team.
In the fall of 2012 Joe Lacob participated in SPIRE’s annual SREC conference along with leaders from the 49ers and Jets organization in a discussion about stadium and arena development. Joe shared with the conference attendees the Warriors’ plan to construct a world class arena at Pier 30 – 32 in the City of San Francisco near the Bay Bridge. The Warriors would like the arena to be built by 2017 and are hard at work with the entitlements, design, and construction plan. The arena with a capacity of 17,500 fans will sit on a 12.5 acre site that will have over 50% of the site dedicated to open space.
The purpose of the SREC evening was for Joe to get to know our SREC members that are active real estate players in the Bay Area. SREC members in attendance included senior executives from the office and multi-family development community, fund managers, and executives from financing firms.
Prior to the game our SREC group had a private dinner within the arena with Joe Lacob, Rick Welts the Warriors President, and Ellen Warner who has recently been hired as the Vice President of Development. The SREC members had a private audience with these key Warriors’ leaders for an insider’s view on what it is like to own an NBA team, run an NBA organization, or be tasked with building a state of the art arena.
The SREC members watched the game from the owner’s suite and a few had courtside seats to enjoy the Warriors three point victory over the Dallas Mavericks that was decided in the last seconds of the game. We appreciate the hospitality of Joe Lacob and the Warriors and look forward to tracking the progress of the San Francisco arena and look forward to conducting a SPIRE member site tour when they commence construction.
