The 2016 Stanford Real Estate Hall of Fame Induction Banquet was held on Wednesday, October 21st at the California Club in Los Angeles. T. Robert “Bob” Burke (‘64, JD ‘67) and Samuel K. Freshman (’54, JD ’56) were honored for their distinguished careers in the real estate industry. Both men have had incredibly long careers in the industry, started their own firms and dedicated time and resources to Stanford University. The 200 Stanford alumni, friends and family were treated to a dinner and program that highlighted the honorees’ inspirational careers. This event is the first of two to honor Bob’s and Sam’s accomplishments. The second event was held on November 4th at the Arrillaga Alumni Center, McCaw Hall at Stanford University.
Doug Neff, Managing Partner and President of IHP Capital, introduced longtime friend and colleague Bob Burke and shared how Bob has been a great friend and influence on their firm and friendship. Bob co-founded IHP Capital with Doug in the 1980s. Sam Freshman’s four daughters, Elena Schumann, Allyce Balson, Sheryl Snyder and Brenda Freshman, gathered on stage with their mother, Ardyth, to introduce Sam. Speaking for the group, Brenda shared stories and personal reflections on their father’s influence in their lives.
Tribute videos chronicling the careers and accomplishments of Bob and Sam were shown during the dinner, and both Bob and Sam expressed their gratitude and appreciation for Stanford and the many associates and colleagues that helped them achieve such recognition in the industry.
The portion of the program celebrating our honorees concluded with Chad Hagle (’98), President of SPIRE, presenting the two honorees with a custom walnut chair crafted by artisans in China. The Stanford Real Estate Hall of Fame chairs are engraved with the Stanford University seal and are replicas of the chairs in the board room of the Stanford Center in Beijing. These chairs have been presented to every inductee into the Stanford Real Estate Hall of Fame.
The 2016 banquet also included a special tribute to Chad Hagle (’98), one of SPIRE’s founders and president for the past six years. Chad will be stepping down as President at the end of 2016. Andy Walburger (’00), former Executive Director of SPIRE and Chad’s Stanford classmate, toasted Chad and thanked him for his leadership and service to the organization.
Bob and Sam embody the Stanford spirit and now join the legacy of Hall of Fame inductees Fred Allen (’61), Peter Bedford (’60), Bob Lowe (MBA ’64), Tad Taube (’53, MS ’57), Buzz McCoy (’58), Bill Tooley (’56), Malin Burnham (’49), Don Koll (’55), Henry Segerstrom (’46, MBA ’48), and William Wilson III (’58).
We thank our sponsors and attendees for a special evening and hope to see our members at upcoming SPIRE events.
