On Friday, November 4th, at the 2016 Stanford Real Estate Hall of Fame Honors Banquet, SPIRE honored T. Robert “Bob” Burke (’64, JD ‘67) and Samuel K. Freshman (’54, JD ’56) for their contributions to the real estate industry and Stanford. Over 220 family members, friends, alumni and students celebrated these two outstanding men and the three pillars of SPIRE – alumni networking, student outreach and educational program development.
Guests were welcomed by a jazz trio and hors d’oeuvres and following the reception, enjoyed a full program that celebrated our honorees, faculty, and students. Many of SPIRE’s Stanford Real Estate Council (SREC) members joined this special evening honoring alumni.
SPIRE Executive Director Elizabeth Lambird (’91) welcomed the guests to McCaw Hall. She acknowledged the faculty and students in attendance, described a course grant SPIRE is making in Urban Studies and announced the student grant recipient, Daniel Hall, a PhD candidate in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. As Daniel was overseas working on his PhD, Ray Levitt, PhD, Associate Chair, Civil & Environmental Engineering, accepted the award on Daniel’s behalf.
Sam Freshman was introduced by 2015 Hall of Fame honoree and SPIRE board member, Fred Allen (’61) who shared professional and personal stories about Sam and his dedication to SPIRE as the Chairman for the past five years. Curtis Feeny, Partner at Voyager Capital and Bob’s former colleague at Stanford Management Company, introduced Bob with many stories and a charming poem that spoke to Bob’s character and sense of humor.
Both inductions were preceded by tribute videos capturing the personal and professional lives of the honorees.
Bob is a co-founder of AMB Property Corporation (predecessor to Prologis), IHP Capital Partners, and Metropolitan Real Estate Equity Management. Prior to co-founding AMB, he was a senior real estate partner with the law firm of Morrison & Foerster and, for two years, served as that firm’s Managing Partner of Operations. At Stanford, Bob served on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Overseers of the Law School, the Board of the Stanford Management Company, the Board of Governors of the Stanford Associates, the Chair of the Advisory Council to the Bing Overseas Studies Program, and the Chair of the Advisory Council to the K-12 Education Initiative. He is a recipient of the Stanford Gold Spike.
Sam is the founder of the real estate investment and management firm Standard Management Company. Standard has acquired, managed, and financed over a billion dollars of real estate. Sam is an expert in real estate syndication and a general partner in over 100 real estate projects. He has secured, negotiated, and documented more than $500 million dollars of real estate loans as a lender, borrower, attorney, banker, and property manager.
We appreciate the support of our sponsors who not only attended the banquet, but also provided tickets to students to attend the evening. We hope to see our members and students at upcoming SPIRE events.
