Event Details

On May 15, 2019, ASPIRE welcomed Chip Conley to Stanford to share his journey from Stanford to Joie de Vivre and now Airbnb. Fresh out of college in 1984, Chip shared the reason behind why he went back to school for a MBA right after graduating. He also shared why he decided to work for a small developer to explore his creativity despite other great offers from big companies. After working his way to become a partner of the same company, Chip soon grew into the thought of starting his own hospitality brand at the heart of San Francisco. Having given a brief overview of his journey, the students got to ask questions and hear more about his conceptual process to design each of Joie de Vise’s hotels. Chip ended the session with his outlook on how technological platforms like Airbnb have been filling the missing gaps in consumer demand and how future companies can identify consumers’ needs that have yet to be addressed.

More information about Chip Conley:

Rebel hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Chip Conley disrupted his favorite industry...... twice. At age 26 he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming an inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. He sold JdV after running it as CEO for 24 years, and soon the young founders of Airbnb asked him to help transform their promising start-up into the world’s leading hospitality brand. Chip served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years and today acts as the company’s Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. His five books have made him a leading authority at the intersection of psychology and business. Chip was awarded “Most Innovative CEO” by the San Francisco Business Times, is the recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, the Pioneer Award, and holds a BA in Economics and MBA from Stanford University. In October 2018, Stanford Professionals in Real Estate (SPIRE) inducted Chip Conley into the Stanford Real Estate Hall of Fame.
