SPIRE members and guests, along with friends from the Stanford Club of Chicago enjoyed a private tour of the recently opened Chicago Architecture Center designed by Chicago-based firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG).

We were honored an thrilled to have the center's President & CEO, Lynn Osmond, Hon AIA, CAE speak with us that evening. Lynn is a recent recipient of the prestigious AIA Illinois Richard Nickel Award for (non-architect) citizens who lift up architecture and the profession. Lynn provided us with an overview of the new center and its impressive programs and exhibits. She discussed the enormous challenges of finding the new home for the center and how they settled on its current location in the heart of the city. She also talked about the strategy behind the center's breathtaking design.

Following the discussion, Deb Rodak, Directo of Sales, took everyone on a tour of the stunning 20,000 square foot center that occupies the base of Mies van der Rohe's 1970 Illinois Center office complex and features custom-designed spaces for public programs and design education, plus nearly 10,000 square feet of exhibits designed in partnership with museum planning and design firm, Gallagher & Associates.

The recently expanded Chicago City Model Experience features an interactive scale model of the city that includes more than 4,000 buildings. A film and light show illuminates the story of Chicago’s growth, its rebirth after the Chicago Fire and the city’s ever-changing skyline that includes some of the most iconic modern towers and the world’s first skyscrapers. The Chicago Gallery explores the city’s residential architecture and some of the key architects who shaped the city, like Louis Sullivan and Mies van der Rohe. From Me to We: Imagining the City of 2050 explores what future urban life will look like in Chicago with insights and predictions offered by local architects. The highlight of the CAC is the stunning Drake Family Skyscraper Gallery that features supersized scale models of famous skyscrapers in Chicago and around the world – some of which are nearly 40-feet tall.

After the tour, the group went to Tavern at the Park to enjoy dinner in the private Sky Box.
